About RenoCost

Updated for 2026 UK pricing

RenoCost is a free online planning tool that gives UK homeowners an indicative renovation cost range in under 30 seconds. It is aimed at anyone in the early stages of planning a home improvement project who wants a starting-point budget before approaching contractors.

Our Mission

To give homeowners a clear, transparent starting point for renovation budgeting, explained in plain English rather than presented as a fixed price.

Who We Help

First-time renovators, property investors and anyone planning home improvements across the UK, from major cities to smaller towns.

Indicative, Not Final

RenoCost results are indicative planning estimates for initial budgeting. They are not contractor quotations, invoices or confirmed final project costs.

Your Privacy Matters

We do not sell your personal data. Contact details are only shared with relevant professionals when you actively request quotes, as explained in our Privacy Policy. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time.

How Our Calculator Works

RenoCost estimates are calculated from published UK cost benchmarks and RenoCost's own documented per-module cost assumptions. The model adjusts these assumptions using:

  • Broad postcode-based pricing region
  • Property type, size and age
  • The renovation scope and modules you select
  • Finish level (standard, mid or premium specification)
  • Reported property condition

The result is a low, mid and high cost range rather than a single fixed figure, because renovation pricing genuinely varies by contractor, specification and site conditions. Property condition, access, contractor availability and site-specific requirements can all change the final cost, so we always recommend getting several written quotes from qualified tradespeople before committing to a budget.

Completed calculator estimates (anonymous session data, not homeowner identities) are also used to produce our public renovation-planning insights, such as the Live Statistics and Cost Index pages. See the Method Glossary for definitions of the terms we use, including how public macro benchmarks, RenoCost's own per-module assumptions, individual calculator estimates and anonymous planning statistics differ from one another.

Editorial Standards and Corrections

Cost assumptions behind the calculator are reviewed periodically by the RenoCost team against published UK cost benchmarks and updated where the underlying reference data changes materially. If you believe a figure, definition or piece of guidance on RenoCost is inaccurate or out of date, please tell us using the contact details below so we can review and, where appropriate, correct it.

How We Handle Your Information

We keep these steps separate, and each one is a choice you make:

  • Seeing your estimate — the calculator shows your cost range without sharing your details with anyone.
  • Emailing your estimate — a one-off email sent to you only. It does not request quotes and does not pass your details to tradespeople or architects.
  • Marketing emails — a separate, optional tick box. Never pre-ticked, and unrelated to any quote request.
  • Requesting quotes — only if you ask for them. Your contact details and project information are then shared with up to 3 relevant tradespeople (main calculator), or with up to 5 relevant architect practices (architect calculator), so they can respond.

Emailing yourself an estimate, opting into marketing and requesting quotes are three separate choices; making one does not opt you into the others. We may also use anonymised, aggregated calculator data for our public renovation-planning statistics. Those figures are built from anonymous session records that do not contain names, email addresses, telephone numbers or full postcodes — location is grouped only by broad region derived from the postcode area letters.

How We Calculate Costs

RenoCost estimates are calculated from published UK cost benchmarks and RenoCost's documented per-module cost assumptions. The model adjusts these assumptions using the property characteristics, selected renovation scope, finish level and broad postcode-based pricing region, then presents a low, mid and high planning range.

  • Published UK benchmarks — macro reference points for construction costs and materials and labour trends, used to sense-check RenoCost's own assumptions.
  • RenoCost's per-module assumptions — cost and duration assumptions for each renovation module, reviewed and updated periodically by the RenoCost team.
  • Estimate ranges — low, mid and high bands set to reflect the realistic spread between competitive and premium specifications, rather than a single fixed price.

Data confidence note

Completed calculator estimates are used to produce anonymous renovation-planning insights. They are not contractor quotations, invoices or confirmed final project costs. RenoCost estimates are intended for initial planning and budgeting. Property condition, specification, access, contractor availability and site-specific requirements can change the final cost. Always obtain detailed written quotations before committing to a project.

Regional adjustments are applied based on postcode area to reflect broad differences in local labour and material rates. See our Method Glossary for definitions of the terms used here.
